About
Thyme essential oil — natural antimicrobial and antioxidant. Potent aromatics mean real sensitization risk; best at low % in rinse-off products.
Thymus vulgaris flower/leaf oil (CAS 8007-46-3) is a volatile essential oil dominated by thymol and carvacrol, with linalool, geraniol, and limonene. In cosmetics it functions as a fragrance, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. Several of its minor constituents are EU Annex III declared fragrance allergens requiring labeling above threshold. Thymol itself (PubChem CID related) and carvacrol are skin irritants at higher concentrations; IFRA limits apply. Safe at low use levels (typically <0.5%) in rinse-off; more caution in leave-on products and around sensitive/compromised skin.
