Good

Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.

A highly water-soluble vitamin E derivative created through extensive ethoxylation, used in aqueous cosmetic formulations for antioxidant and conditioning effects.

Tocophereth-18 is an ethoxylated vitamin E derivative with approximately 18 mol ethylene oxide, functioning as an antioxidant and skin-conditioning agent. The high degree of ethoxylation makes it water-dispersible, suitable for water-based formulations where unmodified vitamin E would not dissolve. The ethoxylation process is well-controlled, and residual free ethylene oxide is minimal at the high-EO end. Vitamin E itself is a natural antioxidant extensively studied and deemed safe by SCCS for cosmetic use.

Skin benefits

  • Water-soluble antioxidant for stable aqueous formulations
  • Conditions and protects skin from oxidative stress
  • May improve skin smoothness and softness

Known concerns

  • Generally very safe; very rare allergic reactions reported
