Good

Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.

A low-degree ethoxylated vitamin E derivative offering antioxidant protection while maintaining partial oil solubility for use in richer formulations.

Tocophereth-5 is an ethoxylated vitamin E derivative with approximately 5 mol ethylene oxide, functioning as an antioxidant and skin-conditioning agent in cosmetics. The lower degree of ethoxylation compared to Tocophereth-50 results in a more lipophilic character while still improving water dispersibility. Vitamin E is on the EU Cosmetics Regulation positive list for use as an antioxidant, and ethoxylation at low levels does not raise additional safety concerns under SCCS evaluation.

Skin benefits

  • Antioxidant protection against environmental stressors
  • Skin-conditioning and moisturizing properties
  • May help stabilize cosmetic formulations

Known concerns

  • Generally very safe; very rare allergic reactions reported
