About
Tranylcypromine (inn) And Its Salts is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Tranylcypromine (INN) is a non-selective and irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor originally developed as an antidepressant. MAOIs are associated with severe drug interactions (tyramine-containing foods, SSRIs, sympathomimetics) and can cause hypertensive crisis. Its presence in any cosmetic product is entirely inappropriate—cosmetic formulations do not undergo the drug safety evaluations required for pharmaceutical ingredients. The SCCS has not evaluated it for cosmetic safety. Any presence in cosmetic products would be considered an adulteration issue under EU cosmetic regulation.
Known concerns
- Pharmaceutical drug ingredient with no cosmetic application — potential adulteration
- GHS H302: harmful if swallowed
- GHS H315: causes skin irritation; H319: causes serious eye irritation
- Severe drug interaction potential if absorbed systemically from topical use
