About

A UV photoinitiator used in gel nails — but newly classified a reproductive toxin. EU cosmetics ban took effect in 2025; avoid going forward.

Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO, CAS 75980-60-8) is a photoinitiator used in UV-cured gel nail polish and artificial-nail products. In 2023 the EU SCCS concluded it is a CMR Category 1B substance (reproductive toxicant) and in Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/197 it was added to Annex II, prohibiting its use in cosmetic products across the EU from September 2025. ACD to TPO in gel-nail users and technicians is extensively documented in dermatology literature. Use going forward is non-compliant in the EU; reformulation to alternative photoinitiators (TPO-L, BAPO variants) is underway industry-wide.
