About
Powdered wheat germ — a nutrient-rich plant ingredient used as a mild scrub and conditioning powder. Generally well tolerated; problematic for wheat-allergic users.
Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Powder (CAS 84012-44-2) is the milled germ portion of common wheat. It contains plant proteins, tocopherols (vitamin E), B-vitamins, and unsaturated lipids. In cosmetics it is used as a mild abrasive in scrubs and as a skin-conditioning bulking agent. Wheat-derived ingredients are widely used and generally well tolerated, but they can trigger reactions in people with diagnosed wheat allergy or in rare cases of contact urticaria; topical wheat hydrolysates have been linked to wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis in published case reports, though the evidence is stronger for hydrolysed gluten than for unmodified germ powder. There is no specific CIR or SCCS opinion for the powder form. The particulate nature can irritate compromised or inflamed skin.
