About

Dhupa or vateria seed butter — a solid plant fat used as an emollient and occlusive. Rich in skin-barrier-friendly triglycerides and classed with common seed butters in safety.

Vateria indica seed butter, sometimes called dhupa or Indian copal butter, is pressed from the seeds of the South Indian tree Vateria indica. It is composed mainly of triglycerides (oleic, palmitic, stearic acids) with minor fractions of unsaponifiables and phytosterols. In cosmetics it functions as an emollient and occlusive skin-conditioning agent, commonly used at 1-10% in balms, lip products, and stick formulas. No CIR monograph specifically covers this butter, but the triglyceride profile is closely analogous to reviewed butters such as shea and mango, which are rated safe. EU CosIng lists it without restriction. Oxidation is the main stability concern; tree-nut cross-reactivity in severely sensitised users cannot be fully excluded.

Skin benefits

  • Rich in triglycerides and phytosterols for barrier support
  • Occlusive emollient with silky skin feel
  • Solid at room temperature — useful for stick and balm formats

Known concerns

  • Possible tree-nut cross-reactivity in sensitised users
  • Oxidation potential if antioxidants are omitted
  • Sourcing sustainability considerations
