About
Veratrum Spp. And Their Preparations is a cosmetic ingredient. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Veratrum species including Veratrum album (white hellebore) and Veratrum nigrum (black hellebore) contain steroidal alkaloids with potent neurotoxic and teratogenic effects. These compounds cause persistent membrane depolarization of nerve and muscle cells by activating sodium channels. EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II prohibits the use of Veratrum species and their preparations in cosmetic products. The teratogenic potential (causing birth defects including cyclopia when exposure occurs during pregnancy) is particularly concerning and there is no safe concentration for cosmetic use.
Known concerns
- EU Annex II banned - toxic plant genus
- Teratogenic potential causing severe birth defects
- Neurotoxic alkaloid content
- No safe cosmetic use concentration
