About
Aromatic steam-distillate water from the fruits of hybrid grape vines (Vitis vinifera × Vitis labrusca), used as a fragrant and antioxidant skin-conditioning ingredient in cosmetics.
Grape fruit water is obtained by steam distillation of Concord and vinifera grape fruits, capturing volatile aromatic and phenolic compounds including benzaldehyde, ethyl acetate, and resveratrol in trace amounts. Vitis labrusca (Concord grape) is native to North America and is a distinct species from Vitis vinifera (European grape), though the hybrid is well-characterised. Grape-derived ingredients have been extensively studied for skin benefits, particularly resveratrol as a potent sirtuin activator and antioxidant. The EU CosIng database lists Vitis vinifera (grape) extract and derived ingredients as safe cosmetic components with no restriction entries. The steam distillation process yields an ingredient free of residual pesticides associated with field-grown grapes.
Skin benefits
- Resveratrol and polyphenols providing potent antioxidant protection
- Anti-inflammatory support for reactive skin
- Skin brightening and tone evening
- Hydrating and refreshing sensory properties
Known concerns
- Sulphites naturally present in grapes at trace levels may cause reactions in individuals with severe sulphite sensitivity (extremely rare from topical use)
