About
A conjugated dienal with strong protein-reactive chemistry. Classified as a skin sensitizer with rodent genotoxicity concerns — not suitable for leave-on cosmetics.
2,4-Hexadienal (CAS 142-83-6) is a doubly-conjugated α,β-unsaturated aldehyde — among the most reactive aldehyde motifs toward skin protein thiols and amines. GHS classifications commonly include acute oral toxicity, skin irritation, serious eye damage, and skin sensitization (H317). The NTP has reported evidence of carcinogenic activity in rodent bioassays via gavage, and the material has positive genotoxicity signals in several assay systems. Used at trace levels in flavor/fragrance, but standard cosmetic practice is to avoid it in leave-on products. No supportive CIR monograph for cosmetic use.
