About
An industrial aromatic nitrile — acutely toxic, with cyanide-release potential on metabolism. Not a cosmetic-appropriate fragrance material.
Benzonitrile (CAS 100-47-0) is an industrial aromatic solvent and intermediate. Standard GHS classifications include acute oral toxicity Category 3 (H301), acute dermal toxicity (H311), and acute inhalation toxicity (H331), plus aquatic toxicity. Aromatic nitriles can undergo partial metabolic conversion to cyanide, and systemic exposure causes CNS depression. There is no supportive CIR or SCCS monograph for cosmetic use, and it is not listed as a fragrance industry standard. While it is often cited as having an almond odor, that flavor/fragrance niche is served by safer benzaldehyde, not benzonitrile.
