Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
An aromatic primary amine formerly used as a hair-dye coupler. Restricted or prohibited for cosmetic hair-dye use in the EU; significant safety concerns.
3,4-Methylenedioxyaniline (CAS 14268-66-7) is an aromatic primary amine historically used as an intermediate in oxidative hair-dye chemistry. The aromatic amine class contains several documented human carcinogens and strong sensitizers. SCCS has reviewed multiple methylenedioxy-substituted aromatic amines as part of hair-dye dossiers; several entries in this family are listed in EU Annex II (prohibited) or Annex III (restricted). The compound itself has a positive signal in Ames-type genotoxicity panels and is a strong potential sensitizer. Not used in modern compliant cosmetic formulation. Score in the Avoid tier.
