A synthetic ethylidene-bicyclic fragrance ester. Ethylidene chemistry makes it more oxidation-reactive than the simpler bicycloheptyl analog.

5-Ethylidenebicyclohept-2-yl propionate (CAS 73347-77-0) is a propanoic-acid ester of an ethylidene-substituted bicycloheptyl alcohol. Used as a fragrance ingredient for warm, sweet-herbal olfactive notes. The pendant ethylidene (vinylidene) group makes it more prone to atmospheric oxidation than the simple bicycloheptyl propionate, which increases the possibility of allergenic hydroperoxide formation. IFRA and RIFM have reviewed fragrance esters in this family and imposed peroxide controls and use-level limits. No EU Annex II/III restriction; typical cosmetic use is well under 1%. No carcinogenicity or reproductive-toxicity signals; main concern is oxidation-driven sensitization.

Skin benefits

  • Synthetic fragrance ester — warm, sweet-herbal character
  • Long-lasting scent component
  • Functional in fine fragrance and functional fragrance

Known concerns

  • Ethylidene group adds oxidation-reactivity — hydroperoxide formation possible
  • Bicycloheptyl fragrance esters can sensitize in oxidized form
  • Subject to IFRA standards
  • Limited independent safety data beyond RIFM
