About

Plant-callus vesicles from sweet flag (Acorus calamus). Concerning because the parent plant is a regulated source of beta-asarone, a genotoxic carcinogen.

Acorus calamus callus extracellular vesicles are nanoscale lipid vesicles isolated from plant cell cultures of Acorus calamus (sweet flag). The parent plant produces beta-asarone, an alkenylbenzene classified as genotoxic and carcinogenic; EU regulations restrict beta-asarone in food and flavourings, and EU CosIng restricts use of Acorus calamus oil unless beta-asarone is below specified limits. Whether callus-vesicle preparations carry residual asarones depends on the chemotype, callus protocol, and purification — disclosure is rarely transparent. There is no SCCS or CIR opinion on the vesicle ingredient.
