About
Denatured ethyl alcohol with eucalyptol, thymol and menthol as denaturing agents; widely used as a solvent and astringent in cosmetic formulations with known drying effects.
SD Alcohol 37 (INCI: Alcohol Denat.) is ethyl alcohol rendered unpalatable by denaturation with eucalyptol, thymol and menthol, in accordance with US 27CFR21 regulations. In EU cosmetics, denatured alcohol falls under the Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 and must comply with the Alcohol Directive 2006/52/EC. The denaturing agents (eucalyptol, thymol, menthol) are used at concentrations that make the product undrinkable but are not harmful in topical cosmetic use. Alcohol itself can cause skin dryness and irritation in leave-on products at high concentrations.
