About

Nanoparticle vesicles extracted from garlic — nature's tiny delivery trucks carrying allicin, sulfur compounds, and flavonoids that penetrate skin to deliver antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Allium sativum vesicles are extracellular vesicles isolated from garlic (Allium sativum) bulbs and plant material. Like other plant EVs, they are lipid bilayer nanoparticles approximately 50-300 nm in diameter shed from plant cells. Garlic-derived EVs contain a distinctive cargo including allicin (produced upon crushing from alliin and alliinase), diallyl disulfide, S-allyl cysteine, flavonoids, and sulfur-containing metabolites. The vesicle format protects these reactive sulfur compounds from degradation and facilitates their delivery into skin cells upon application. Garlic's characteristic sulfur chemistry is well-documented — allicin is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and the precursor to other bioactive disulfides and trisulfides. The EVs may also carry small RNAs that could influence skin cell gene expression through cross-kingdom RNA interference, a mechanism that is an emerging area of research in plant-derived nanomedicine.

Function

SKIN PROTECTING, SKIN CONDITIONING - HUMECTANT

Skin benefits

  • Potent antimicrobial activity against skin pathogens
  • Antioxidant protection from sulfur radical scavenging
  • Anti-inflammatory modulation through sulfur compound signaling
  • May support skin cell proliferation and wound healing

Known concerns

  • Garlic allergy — individuals allergic to Allium species may experience contact dermatitis
  • Strong sulfur odor may be a formulation challenge
  • High concentrations of reactive sulfur compounds may irritate broken skin
  • May interact with blood coagulation pathways if absorbed systemically
