About

The root of Angelica acutiloba, a Japanese medicinal plant traditionally used to support blood circulation and nourish the skin.

Angelica acutiloba is a traditional Japanese kampo botanical related to Angelica sinensis. Like other Angelica species, it contains furanocoumarins (e.g., imperatorin, isoimperatorin) that can cause photosensitisation at high concentrations. Under EU Annex III, furanocoumarins used in sun-exposed products are restricted. At cosmetic dilution levels, the ingredient is generally considered safe and is widely used in Asian skincare formulations.

Skin benefits

  • Promotes blood microcirculation, supporting skin nutrition
  • Contains ligustilide with anti-inflammatory activity
  • Traditional use for dull, fatigued skin

Known concerns

  • Furanocoumarin content may cause photosensitisation; EU Annex III restrictions apply for sun-exposure products
