About
An aromatic hydrocarbon fraction from benzene distillation containing benzene above the threshold, banned from EU cosmetic formulations.
This is an aromatic C9-12 hydrocarbon fraction from benzene distillation containing >0.1% w/w benzene. Benzene is classified as Category 1A carcinogen (H350) and Category 1A germ cell mutagen (H340) under EU CLP Regulation 1272/2008. The EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II prohibits benzene-containing streams from cosmetic products. Aromatic C9-12 streams from benzene distillation contain mixed xylenes, toluene, ethylbenzene, and residual benzene — none of which are permitted at these concentrations.
Known concerns
- Contains >0.1% benzene, a Category 1A carcinogen (H350)
- Contains >0.1% benzene, a Category 1A germ cell mutagen (H340)
- Prohibited in EU cosmetic products under Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II
- Aromatic hydrocarbon mixture with additional toluene and xylene exposure risk
