About
A quaternary ammonium biocide with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, permitted in cosmetics but subject to specific concentration limits in the EU.
Benzalkonium chloride/bromide is a mixture of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium salts widely used as a preservative and antimicrobial agent. EU Annex V (preservatives) permits benzalkonium chloride with specific concentration limits; the bromide analogue has similar regulatory treatment. III/65 and V/54 references in CosIng confirm specific restrictions. H314 (skin burns) and H318 (serious eye damage) require careful formulation to avoid irritation.
Skin benefits
- Broad-spectrum preservative extending product shelf life
- Antimicrobial efficacy against bacteria and fungi
Known concerns
- H314/H318: severe skin and eye irritation at use concentrations
- H317: contact sensitisation reported
- H400: acute aquatic toxicity
