About

A methoxy-substituted benzophenone (Benzophenone-10) used as a UV filter or stabilizer; benzophenones are under SCCS review due to potential endocrine-disruption evidence.

Benzophenone-10 (also called 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-4'-methylbenzophenone, CAS 1641-17-4) is a benzophenone derivative functioning as a UV filter or light stabiliser in cosmetic formulations. The benzophenone family has been subject to regulatory scrutiny; Benzophenone-3 (oxybenzone) is restricted in the EU due to endocrine-disruption concerns. Benzophenone-10 is less studied but shares the core benzophenone structure with its characteristic α-oxo-carbonyl photoactive system. The SCCS has not issued a definitive opinion on Benzophenone-10 specifically, but the entire class is under re-evaluation.

Skin benefits

  • UV filter — absorbs UVB and UVA radiation
  • Photo stabiliser — protects formulation from UV-induced degradation
  • Fragrance fixative — used in perfume compositions for light-stability

Known concerns

  • Benzophenone class — potential endocrine modulation (shared with restricted BP-3)
  • UV absorption — photoactive compounds require skin penetration and safety review
  • SCCS class-level concern — pending full re-evaluation for cosmetic UV use
  • Environmental concern — benzophenones detected as aquatic pollutants
