BIS-GLUTATHIONE TRISULFIDE
Safety score · 0–100
Fine
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A disulfide-bridged form of glutathione — an antioxidant derivative used for skin brightening claims. Gentle profile but cosmetic data are limited.
Bis-glutathione trisulfide is a glutathione dimer connected via a trisulfide bridge. As a glutathione derivative it carries the antioxidant and thiol-exchange chemistry of GSH, which is often marketed for tone-evening and antioxidant support. Glutathione and its derivatives are not on any cosmetic restricted list; safety is extrapolated from endogenous human physiology and decades of supplement use. Cosmetic-specific clinical efficacy for bis-glutathione trisulfide (vs plain glutathione or GSSG) is limited, and stability in aqueous formulas is tricky — thiols and polysulfides oxidize readily and can develop sulfur odors. Evidence for topical penetration and effect is modest.
Skin benefits
- Glutathione-derivative antioxidant
- Thiol-based radical scavenging potential
- Supports skin antioxidant network
Known concerns
- Sulfur odor or sulfide character possible
- Limited cosmetic-specific clinical data
- Stability sensitive to oxidation and pH
