About
Butyl Formate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Butyl formate is the ester of n-butanol and formic acid, functioning as a fragrance ingredient with a fruity, rum-like odour. Formic acid esters are more reactive and potentially more irritating than higher carboxylic acid esters due to the smaller formate moiety. EU CosIng does not list butyl formate in Annex II or III restrictions. The primary concern is mild irritation upon occluded or prolonged skin exposure. Respiratory irritation may occur with aerosolised products at high concentrations. Not a fragrance allergen and generally safe at normal use levels in leave-on and rinse-off products.
Skin benefits
- Fragrance material with fruity-rum character
Known concerns
- Mild skin and eye irritant at high concentrations
