About
Butylated Xylenol is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Butylated xyleneol (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol or para-xylenol analogue) is a hindered phenolic antioxidant structurally related to BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene). It is used to protect cosmetic formulations from lipid oxidation, extending product shelf life. EU CosIng does not list butylated xyleneol in Annex II or III restrictions, but alkylphenols are subject to increasing regulatory scrutiny under REACH for environmental toxicity (endocrine disruption potential) and skin sensitisation. The ortho-para substitution pattern and tert-butyl groups provide antioxidant activity but also moderate the sensitisation potential relative to simpler phenols. The score reflects a moderately regulated antioxidant with known concerns.
Skin benefits
- Antioxidant protection for cosmetic formulations
- Extends product shelf life
Known concerns
- Skin sensitisation concern
- Environmental toxicity - alkylphenol regulatory scrutiny
- Potential endocrine disruption under REACH assessment
