About
A classic sulfide depilatory — safer than barium but still H2S-releasing and alkaline. Only in tightly regulated rinse-off hair-removal products.
Calcium Sulfide (CaS, CAS 20548-54-3) is an inorganic sulfide used historically as a depilatory — it reduces hair-keratin disulfides, allowing short-contact chemical hair removal. It is among the safer members of the sulfide-depilatory class because calcium ion absorption does not produce acute systemic toxicity like barium does, but the fundamental H2S-liberation chemistry remains: contact with water or acids generates hydrogen sulfide, with associated acute inhalation toxicity, malodor and mucous-membrane irritation. EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III regulates calcium sulfide depilatory use with concentration, pH and labeling restrictions. Modern formulations generally prefer thioglycolates. Not appropriate for leave-on products.
