About
A sulfide depilatory like its calcium/strontium siblings — releases toxic H2S on contact with water. Only suitable for strictly controlled rinse-off depilatories.
Magnesium Sulfide (MgS, CAS 12032-36-9) is an inorganic sulfide which, like calcium and strontium sulfides, hydrolyzes in aqueous systems to liberate hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It has depilatory activity through disulfide-bond reduction in hair keratin. EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex III covers sulfide depilatories, requiring maximum concentration, pH range, strict labeling, contact-time warnings, and rinse-off-only use. The H2S liberation profile brings acute-toxicity concerns for inhalation and malodorous sensory issues, alongside real skin/eye irritation and chemical-burn potential with extended contact. Modern depilatory formulations predominantly use thioglycolate systems, so this ingredient is largely of historical importance. No leave-on cosmetic use is appropriate.
