About

Steam-distilled water from ylang-ylang flowers — gentler than the pure essential oil but still carries fragrance allergen caveats.

Cananga Odorata Flower Water (CAS 83863-30-3) is the aqueous hydrosol co-produced when ylang-ylang essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers. It contains trace essential-oil components (linalool, geraniol, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, isoeugenol, farnesol) at much lower concentration than the oil itself. These materials are listed EU fragrance allergens under the 26/81 allergen labeling regulation, and IFRA restricts ylang-ylang oil in leave-on use. As a hydrosol, the exposure risk is lower but not zero, especially at high inclusion in leave-on products. No acute toxicity concerns; contact sensitization is the main caveat.

Skin benefits

  • Gentle aromatic character
  • Low-intensity scenting
  • Mild antimicrobial support
  • Traditional perfumery use

Known concerns

  • Fragrance allergens (linalool, isoeugenol, etc.)
  • Contact sensitization risk
  • IFRA-restricted essential-oil family
  • Caution in sensitive-skin leave-on
