About
Capryleth-4 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
CAPRYLETH-4 is a nonionic surfactant derived from capryl alcohol (C8) with approximately 4 moles of ethylene oxide. The short alkyl chain and low EO degree result in a surfactant with efficient foaming properties and good degreasing ability. In the EU, this ingredient is listed in Annex III and is permitted in rinse-off cosmetic products. The SCCS has assessed the safety of C8-C10 ethoxylated surfactants and concluded they present low concern at typical rinse-off concentrations, though leave-on use requires a safety assessment.
Skin benefits
- Efficient foaming surfactant ideal for facial cleansers and body washes
- Mild cleansing action effectively removes oil and impurities without harsh stripping
Known concerns
- Low EO degree means the surfactant can be more drying than higher EO ethoxylates
- EU purity standards require residual monomer control
- Primarily recommended for rinse-off formulations; leave-on use requires evaluation
