About
Cephaeline And Its Salts is a cosmetic ingredient. Raw material has significant toxicity. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Cephaeline is an isoquinoline alkaloid from Carapichea ipecacuanha (ipecac root) with potent emetic properties. It acts centrally via the chemoreceptor trigger zone and directly on the GI tract. EU CLP classification includes H300 (fatal if swallowed) and H330 (fatal if inhaled). The emetic effect at low doses and potential for systemic toxicity (particularly in children) led to its prohibition in cosmetic products. The EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex II prohibits cephaeline and its salts.
Known concerns
- Acute toxicity H300/H330
- Potent emetic agent
- Toxic isoquinoline alkaloid
- Risk to children
- Banned in EU cosmetics (Annex II)
