About

A heavy thermal cracked petroleum naphtha containing benzene above 0.1% w/w, with the heavy thermal cracking process introducing additional polyaromatic hydrocarbons — prohibited under EU Annex II.

Heavy thermal cracked naphtha results from severe thermal cracking conditions that produce a broad molecular weight range including C8-C15 hydrocarbons. The thermal cracking process generates both benzene and higher polyaromatic structures. This stream additionally contains cracked olefins and diolefins which raise concerns for skin oxidation and contact sensitization. It is prohibited for cosmetic use under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.

Known concerns

  • Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
  • Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
  • Contains cracked olefins — skin sensitizers via oxidation
  • Contains polyaromatic hydrocarbons beyond benzene
  • Heavy aromatic matrix with aspiration and bioaccumulation concern
