About
A full-range alkylate naphtha from petroleum included when benzene exceeds 0.1% w/w — alkylation produces branched alkanes but can still retain benzene from feedstocks, triggering EU cosmetics prohibition.
This full-range alkylate naphtha is produced by alkylation of isobutane with olefins to produce high-octane branched alkanes, included here when it contains more than 0.1% w/w benzene. EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II prohibits benzene above this threshold in cosmetic products, and under CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 the substance is classified as CMR Category 1A carcinogen. Alkylate naphthas are typically low in aromatics, but when benzene is present above 0.1% from feedstock contamination, prohibition applies regardless of the alkylation process.
Known concerns
- Contains benzene >0.1% w/w — EU Annex II prohibited substance
- CMR Category 1A carcinogen under CLP
- Flammable hydrocarbon mixture
- Variable composition depending on feedstock
