About
Japanese cedar leaf water — a clean woody hydrosol used in traditional Japanese skincare. Safe for most; fragrance-reactive skin should test first.
Cryptomeria japonica leaf water is the steam-distilled hydrosol from Japanese cedar needles. It is used as a fragrant water-phase ingredient with traditional Japanese wellbeing associations. The aromatic fraction contains sesquiterpenes and small amounts of sesquiterpenols that can cause sensitisation in susceptible individuals, though concentrations in the leaf water are substantially lower than in cedar essential oil. No EU CosIng restriction applies specifically to the species; labelling may trigger for any listed allergens that cross Annex III thresholds. Peer-reviewed cosmetic safety data are limited.
Skin benefits
- Fresh woody aroma
- Traditional Japanese-skincare character
- Lower allergen load than the essential oil
Known concerns
- Cedar-sesquiterpene sensitisation risk
