About
Japanese cedar bark — a traditional botanical with mild astringent and fragrant terpene content. May sensitise fragrance-reactive skin.
Cryptomeria japonica bark (CAS 91771-60-7) is derived from the Japanese cedar tree (sugi). The bark contains diterpenes, sesquiterpenes (notably cryptomerione), tannins, and phenolics with mild antimicrobial and astringent activity. EU CosIng lists it for skin-conditioning and abrasive functions. No Annex II/III restrictions. Conifer essential-oil components can be mildly sensitising in people reactive to tree-terpene fragrances, so patch testing is advisable. No CIR or SCCS review specific to this species.
