About

A dimethylated hydroquinone — a compound class with serious cosmetic restriction history and best avoided.

2,5-Dimethylhydroquinone (CAS 95-71-6) and related dimethyl isomers are substituted hydroquinones — a chemical class strictly regulated in cosmetics. Unsubstituted hydroquinone is banned in EU cosmetics (Annex II) and its use as a leave-on cosmetic is restricted in most jurisdictions because of ochronosis, contact sensitization, irritation, and concerns about mutagenicity. Methylated hydroquinones can still undergo oxidative activation and have antioxidant/redox activity, so regulators have historically been cautious about their cosmetic use. Although this specific compound is sometimes listed as a fragrance, hydroquinone-class labeling alone is enough to reduce confidence; conservative practice is to avoid it in modern cosmetic formulations.

Skin benefits

  • Historical use as antioxidant/stabilizer
  • May contribute an olfactory role at trace levels

Known concerns

  • Hydroquinone-class compound — skin-lightening concern
  • Hydroquinone is restricted/banned as cosmetic leave-on ingredient in EU and heavily regulated elsewhere
  • Potential for ochronosis, sensitization, and tissue damage
  • Dimethylated variant may still undergo oxidative or metabolic activation
  • Not considered a safe cosmetic ingredient
