Direct Red 81 (CI 28160) is a direct azo dye listed in EU Annex II/1267, prohibiting its use in all cosmetic products in the EU. Like other azo dyes restricted under this Annex, it may undergo cleavage to release aromatic amines, some of which are classified as carcinogens. The compound has no permitted use in cosmetics and its detection in formulations represents a regulatory compliance issue.
