About
A copper-EDTA complex used in cosmetics for its antimicrobial and color-stabilizing properties — the chelated copper is safely bound and non-irritating.
Disodium EDTA-Copper (CAS 14025-15-1) is a chelate complex of copper(II) with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in its disodium salt form. The copper is tightly bound within the EDTA chelate cage, making it non-reactive and non-irritating. In cosmetics, it functions as a chelating agent (sequestrant) and may provide mild antimicrobial activity from the copper. The CIR Expert Panel reviewed EDTA salts and found them safe as used in cosmetics. The copper component adds antioxidant potential without the irritation of free copper ions.
Skin benefits
- Chelating agent — stabilizes product formulations
- Mild antimicrobial from complexed copper
- Protects against metal-catalyzed oxidation
Known concerns
- EDTA is poorly biodegradable — environmental persistence concern
- Very high concentrations of EDTA may enhance skin penetration of other substances
- Copper allergies are rare but possible
