Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A mild sulfosuccinate surfactant with a palmitic acid amide backbone, delivering effective cleansing with lower irritation potential than conventional sulfate surfactants.
The palmitic (C16) amide moiety in this disodium sulfosuccinate provides a more hydrophobic character than its lauryl counterpart, resulting in a richer foam profile and more substantive feel on skin. The low 2-mol PEG group contributes water solubility without significantly altering mildness. Similar amide-linked sulfosuccinates have a long history of safe use in Europe. EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 does not restrict this ingredient specifically; it is classified as a permitted surfactant in rinse-off cosmetic products.
Skin benefits
- Delivers rich, creamy lather with good skin-feel characteristics
- Effective at removing sebum and environmental impurities
Known concerns
- Eye contact should be avoided as mild irritation may occur
- Skin tolerance varies — patch testing recommended for sensitive-skin formulations
