About
Vanadium pentoxide — a multi-CMR-classified industrial oxide prohibited from cosmetics under EU law. Not an ingredient, a watch-list entry.
Divanadium pentaoxide (vanadium(V) oxide, CAS 1314-62-1) is a yellow-orange inorganic oxide used industrially as a catalyst and in steel/alloy production. IARC classifies it as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) on the basis of rodent lung tumour data. EU CLP harmonised classification is extensive: Carc. 2, Muta. 2, Repr. 2, STOT RE 1 (respiratory), Acute Tox. 4 (inhalation and oral), and chronic aquatic toxicity. Because EU Cosmetics Regulation automatically prohibits CMR 1A/1B substances and strongly restricts Cat. 2, and because there is no cosmetic function, this ingredient is effectively banned. Listing in cosmetic databases reflects CMR watch-listing rather than any formulation use.
