About

Dodoxynol-6 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Dodoxynol-6 is an alkylphenyl polyethoxylate (APEO) based on dodecylphenyl, structurally related to Nonoxynol compounds. APEOs are subject to EU restrictions in cosmetic products due to concerns about their biodegradation metabolites (alkylphenols) which are endocrine-disrupting and bioaccumulative. While Dodoxynol-6 itself is not specifically listed in EU Annexes, the broader APEO class has been restricted under REACH due to environmental and toxicological concerns. The ingredient is also a potential irritant and the ethoxylation process can introduce 1,4-dioxane contamination. EU cosmetics formulators increasingly avoid this ingredient class in favor of fatty alcohol ethoxylates.

Skin benefits

  • Effective emulsifier and surfactant
  • Good solubilizing properties
  • Stable across wide pH range

Known concerns

  • Endocrine-disrupting potential of alkylphenyl metabolites
  • EU REACH environmental restrictions on APEOs
  • 1,4-dioxane contamination from ethoxylation
  • Potential for skin and eye irritation
  • Bioaccumulation concerns for degradation products
