About
Embelia ribes root powder, a traditional Ayurvedic herb used in skincare for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and protective skin benefits.
Embelia ribes contains embelin (3-undecyl-2-methoxy-6-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone) as the major constituent, along with flavonoids and alkaloids. Embelin is a known abortifacient and has demonstrated reproductive and developmental toxicity in animal studies (foetal resorption, teratogenicity). The EU has not listed Embelia ribes in Annex II (banned substances), but the reproductive toxicity profile is a significant concern for cosmetic use, particularly in leave-on products. Use in cosmetic formulations is not recommended without extensive safety data and regulatory approval.
Skin benefits
- Embelin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
- Traditional use for parasitic skin conditions
- Antimicrobial activity against certain skin pathogens
Known concerns
- Embelin is a documented reproductive toxicant and abortifacient in animal studies
- Developmental toxicity (teratogenicity) documented in preclinical studies
- Not recommended for cosmetic use without specific EU safety approval
