About
Ethisterone is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Ethisterone (CAS 434-03-7) is a synthetic steroid hormone with both androgenic and progestogenic activity, historically used as an oral progestogen. It is listed in EU Annex II of Regulation 1223/2009 as a prohibited cosmetic ingredient due to its hormonal nature. The compound's ability to bind androgen and progesterone receptors makes it completely incompatible with cosmetic application, as systemic hormonal effects cannot be ruled out even from topical exposure.
Known concerns
- EU Annex II banned — androgenic/progestogenic steroid
- Hormonal activity precludes cosmetic use
- No safe topical use concentration established
