About
A simple heterocyclic solvent that is a probable human carcinogen — not a cosmetic ingredient. EU Annex II prohibited.
Furan (CAS 110-00-9) is a small, volatile, flammable heterocyclic oxygen-containing aromatic compound, used primarily as a chemical synthesis intermediate. It is classified by IARC as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) on the basis of clear animal carcinogenicity (liver tumors in rats and mice), and under EU CLP as Carc. 1B (presumed human carcinogen) and Muta. 2. It is also a volatile flammable liquid with inhalation toxicity concerns. Furan is prohibited for use in cosmetic products under EU Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 Annex II. It has no legitimate cosmetic function; its INCI/CosIng-adjacent listing formalizes its prohibited status in cosmetic databases.
