About
Furazolidone (inn) is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Furazolidone is a synthetic nitrofuran antibiotic historically used in human and veterinary medicine. Like all nitrofuran drugs, it is prohibited from cosmetic products under EU Annex II because it is a pharmacologically active drug substance not authorised for cosmetic use. Nitrofurans are associated with potential carcinogenicity and severe cutaneous adverse reactions. The ecological dimension of antibiotic residues in cosmetic products also contributes to environmental resistance concerns, making furazolidone completely unsuitable for any cosmetic formulation.
Known concerns
- Prohibited pharmacologically active substance — EU Annex II
- Potential carcinogen (nitrofuran class)
- Severe cutaneous reactions
- Antibiotic resistance ecological concern
