About
Galantamine (inn) is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Galantamine (INN, also known as galanthamine) is a tertiary alkaloid extracted from snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) and related plants, and also produced synthetically. It is a reversible, competitive acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and allosteric modulator of nicotinic receptors, used as a prescription drug (Reminyl/Razadyne) for Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders. There is no plausible cosmetic function for an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Its pharmacological activity and potential systemic effects if percutaneously absorbed rule out cosmetic use. No regulatory body has assessed galantamine as safe for cosmetic applications. The score of 10 reflects the drug classification and absence of any cosmetic authorisation.
Known concerns
- Prescription drug — not permitted in cosmetic products
- Systemically active acetylcholinesterase inhibitor
- No EU CosIng listing or SCCS assessment
- Pharmacological mechanism incompatible with cosmetic safety goals
- Narrow therapeutic index — systemic exposure from topical use is concerning
