About
Sunflower seed flour — a mild, food-grade plant flour used as a gentle exfoliant, oil-absorber, and bulking agent in powder cosmetics.
Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed flour is the finely milled cake from defatted sunflower seeds, carrying residual tocopherols, phytosterols, and some linoleic-acid-rich lipids along with proteins and fibres. In cosmetics it is used as a bulking, absorbing, mildly exfoliating, and skin-conditioning ingredient, commonly at 1-10% in powders and cleansers. Sunflower ingredients broadly have an excellent safety record, with CIR-favourable reviews of related sunflower-seed-oil materials. EU CosIng lists the flour without restriction. Residual oil content means formulations should include antioxidants to limit rancidity. No IARC concern; no GHS hazards.
Skin benefits
- Gentle mechanical exfoliation and oil-absorbing action
- Provides vitamin E and linoleic acid residues
- Food-grade bulking ingredient
Known concerns
- Rancidity risk if residual oil is high
- Possible seed-allergy cross-reactivity
- Requires preservation in aqueous systems
