Avoid
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A C4-5 hydrocarbon fraction with potential 1,3-butadiene contamination; the butadiene impurity level triggers the EU Annex II prohibition on carcinogenic substances in cosmetics.
This hydrocarbon cut (butane-pentane range) is used as fuel or industrial solvent. Refinery streams in this boiling range are known to sometimes carry butadiene as a trace contaminant. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II and CLP classification (EC) 1272/2008, 1,3-butadiene is a Category 1A carcinogen making any stream containing it at >0.1% w/w prohibited in cosmetic products. This ingredient has no established cosmetic function.
Known concerns
- 1,3-Butadiene >0.1% w/w — Category 1A carcinogen, EU Annex II prohibited
- Refinery hydrocarbon stream without cosmetic safety assessment
- Volatile flammable mixture unsuitable for topical application
