About

Vesicular structures isolated from the rhizomes of Iris × germanica (German iris), containing irone, isoflavones, and phenolic compounds with aromatic and potential anti-ageing properties.

Iris germanica rhizome vesicles are an innovative cosmetic ingredient derived from plant subcellular structures. Rhizomes of Iris species contain isoflavones (e.g., irisflorentin), triterpenoids, and the characteristic aromatic ketone irone, responsible for violet-like fragrance. As vesicles are a relatively novel cosmetic ingredient class, comprehensive toxicological datasets are still developing. Iris species contain bezeneids and furanofuran lignans that have shown mild cytotoxic activity in vitro at high concentrations, but no specific EU restrictions apply to Iris germanica rhizome vesicles in cosmetic use.

Skin benefits

  • Aromatic properties for natural fragrance applications
  • Isoflavones may support skin firmness via collagen modulation
  • Antioxidant phenolics protecting against environmental stress
  • Emerging vesicular delivery enhancing penetration of co-actives

Known concerns

  • Emerging ingredient class — limited long-term human safety data
  • Mild cytotoxic compounds (irone, certain lignans) at high concentrations in vitro
  • Potential allergenicity for individuals sensitised to iris or orris root materials
