About
A fruity-apple ester used as a fragrance and flavor note. Safe at low IFRA-compliant levels but carries typical fragrance-ester cautions.
Isoamyl Valerate (CAS 2050-09-1, isopentyl pentanoate) is a simple ester of isoamyl alcohol and valeric acid, giving a sweet, fruity, apple-like aroma. It is used at trace-to-low levels in perfumery, flavoring, and fragranced cosmetics. It has a long food-flavoring safety history (FEMA GRAS), and IFRA does not impose unusual restrictions on this material. At cosmetic use levels (typically <0.1% of total formula), the compound is well-tolerated. Like all volatile esters it can be mildly irritating on application at high neat concentrations and occasionally causes contact sensitization in predisposed individuals.
Skin benefits
- Pleasant apple fragrance
- Low residue at rinse-off
- FEMA GRAS flavoring
- Minimal skin buildup
Known concerns
- Potential fragrance sensitization
- Mild irritation at high neat %
