About
A long-chain fatty ester (isopropyl + arachidic/C20 acid) used as a rich emollient. Soft, conditioning, and well tolerated, with mild comedogenic potential.
Isopropyl arachidate (CAS 26718-90-1) is the isopropyl ester of arachidic acid, a saturated 20-carbon fatty acid. In cosmetics it acts as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent, giving creams and balms a rich, cushioned feel. CIR has reviewed the broad class of isopropyl alkyl esters and concluded they are safe as used in cosmetics with no significant skin sensitization, mutagenicity, or systemic toxicity at use levels. Like many isopropyl fatty esters it carries a mild-to-moderate comedogenic rating, so it is best avoided in heavy concentrations on acne-prone skin.
