About
Isosteareth-10 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Isosteareth-10 is the polyethylene glycol 10-mole ether of isostearyl alcohol (a branched C18 chain from isostearic acid). CosIng lists this ingredient with no EU Annex restrictions. The branched alkyl chain provides improved skin compatibility compared to linear counterparts, reducing the tendency for skin barrier disruption. Similar to other fatty alcohol ethoxylates, it has been reviewed by CIR and found safe in cosmetic use. The primary impurity concern is 1,4-dioxane from the ethoxylation process, which must be controlled under EU GMP. Lower ethoxylation degrees (like EO10) have somewhat higher lipophilicity and potential for skin interaction.
Skin benefits
- Provides stable emulsification for o/w systems
- Branched C18 chain offers emollient-like skin feel
- Compatible with many cosmetic actives
Known concerns
- May cause mild skin or eye irritation at high concentrations
- 1,4-dioxane trace impurity from ethoxylation
- Limited dedicated safety data vs. more common ethoxylated surfactants
