About

Isosteareth-22 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Isosteareth-22 is the polyethylene glycol 22-mole ether of isostearyl alcohol (branched C18 chain from isostearic acid), CAS 52292-17-8. Listed in CosIng with emulsifying and surfactant functions, no EU Annex restrictions. The branched isostearyl structure is well-known in cosmetics for providing better skin compatibility than linear fatty chains, as it resists crystallization and integrates more readily with skin lipids. Higher EO degrees like EO22 provide enhanced water solubility. The broader isostearyl series has been reviewed by CIR with favorable safety conclusions. 1,4-dioxane is the primary impurity concern, controlled under EU GMP.

Skin benefits

  • Branched C18 chain provides superior skin feel vs. linear counterparts
  • Effective emulsifier for various cosmetic systems
  • Conditions and softens skin
  • Good compatibility with skin lipids

Known concerns

  • 1,4-dioxane trace contamination from ethoxylation
  • Mild eye irritation potential at high concentrations
  • Limited standalone toxicological data vs. more common isosteareth variants
